NHBRC deregisters errant builders from it database

The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) has deregistered 17 contractors and builders from its database of approved homebuilders following the outcome of a disciplinary hearing. The names of the affected contractors have been published in the Government Gazette of March 15.

Gauteng govt to release property to Wits for student accommodation

The Gauteng provincial government has signed a memorandum of intent (MoI) with the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) for the release of five properties around Constitution Hill, as part of the provincial government’s Rapid Land Release Programme. The agreement, which was signed by Infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo and Wits vice-chancellor and principal Professor Adam Habib, paves the way for the university to conduct a due diligence process and feasibility studies, including a financial model, that will result in the buildings transformed to meet their institutional needs.

Property developer Atterbury Europe’s Mall of Cyprus Phase 1 expansion has opened to shoppers with an added 6 000 m2 of retail space, 15 new retail brands, six new food and beverage concepts and 300 extra parking spaces.

The €30-million expansion of the Mall of Cyprus was designed to further Atterbury Europe’s strategy to maximise the value of its assets.

Joburg mayor excited about R20bn inner city development project

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba said he is looking forward to seeing cranes across the inner city within six to eight months when construction on more than 20 developments worth around R20 billion is set to begin. Mashaba was accompanied by the MMC for Economic Development Leah Knott, and MMC for Development Planning Reuben Masango, as well as City Manager Dr Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni as the Joburg Property Company (JPC) welcomed the group of developers and investors who will realise 24 developments to the Joburg inner city in the coming months.

KZN floods cause damage of over R1bn, province wants disaster declared

The cost of damage to various parts of KwaZulu-Natal following last week’s heavy rains and localised flooding has run into billions of rand, Premier Willies Mchunu said on Monday. “The estimated damage currently stands at R1.1-billion, with the eThekwini damage alone estimated at over R685-million. Railways, roads, houses full of furniture and personal possession were damaged and at places destroyed entirely,” Mchunu said at his Durban offices.

Global steel production increases to 444 Mt in first quarter

Global crude steel production for the first quarter of this year increased by 4.5% year-on-year to 444.1-million tonnes, global industry body, the World Steel Association (worldsteel), said in a statement on Monday. Asia produced 312.9-million tonnes of crude steel during the first three months of the year, an increase of 7% over the first quarter of 2018.

Zambia sets sights on yet more solar as another 34 MW is connected to grid

The 34 MW Ngonye solar photovoltaic plant, in Zambia, has been connected to the country’s grid and has started operations. Once fully up and running, the facility is expected to produce about 70 GWh of electricity yearly and help the Southern African country diversify its power mix away from its current reliance on hydroelectricity.

Abland’s Rubik development set for July 2021 completion

Property developer Abland expects to start demolition and earthworks on The Rubik mixed-use development, in Loop street, in the Cape Town central business district, in the second half of this year.

In partnership with Nedbank, Abland will erect a new building with retail, commercial and residential components.

EIB extends €82m loan to Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed an €82-million, or 1.3-billion Lesotho Maloti, loan for the Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project Phase 2 (LLWDP 2).

The project aims to improve access to clean water in four priority areas of the Lesotho lowlands. LLWDP 2 is the second phase of the Lesotho Lowlands Water Supply Scheme that was conceived with technical assistance from the European Union (EU).
